Ban Highlights Commerce Chambers Role in World Economy
Doha, April 23 (QNA) - U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that commerce chambers play a significant role in world economy especially as they tackle challenges and defend humanitarian, social and environmental values.
Ban made the statement in a televised address during the opening session of the 8th World Chambers Congress, which launched Tuesday in Doha, saying that the world today needs a lot of commitment and partnership between the government and private sectors in order to set an agenda for combating corruption and facing climate change.
He urged business owners and the world's private sector to use their influence in order to make progress in women's human rights and empowerment in job opportunities so as to guarantee gender equality, noting that this will eventually result in nations' prosperity and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals in 2015.
He also called upn world leaders to address the phenomena of hunger, poverty, disease and inequality, wishing the conference to bring better sustainable future through its sessions and recommendations. (QNA)
