MALAYSIAN DELEGATES INTERESTED IN INDONESIAN GENDER ISSUE
Jakarta, Nov 1 (ANTARA) - As many as 12 delegates of the Malaysian Sister In Islam who came to Indonesia were interested in knowing more about gender issue in this world largest archipelagic country.
"We are very proud of progressive ideas in Indonesia of its ulemas, religious leaders who are quite wise in seeing gender issue," Norhayanti, the leader of the Malaysian Sister In Islam delegation, said here on Saturday.
According to her, the 12 delegates who came to Indonesia were composed of religious leaders, the Malaysian Syariah Supreme Court, lucturers of Malaysian National Unversity and representatives of the Malaysian women's organizations association.
"Our visit to Indonesia is to have a close look at reality of community here and to know the existing opinion in Indonesia with a focus on geneder issue," he said.
Prior to Jakarta, the Malaysian delegation directly flew to Surabaya and then to Bondowoso while enjoying their meeting with Islamic leaders in East Java and Gus Dur in Jakarta.
"In Indonesia, every body has no problem with a difference of opinion, never feel angry if criticized. If we feel cornered with the critics, we have the rights to answer. The democracy in Indonesia is running well, but such a condition like this could not be found in her country," Norhayanti said.
Asked what they would bring home, she said her side wanted to promote gender issue in Malaysia, because there was no talks on gender issue, she said.
Nurhayati expressed her admiration of the press freedom in Indonesia. "I am really proud of press freedom in this country which is also supported by the government."
