GOVT SHOULD NOT PRIVATIZE SEA'S RESOURCES TO FOREIGNERS, SAYS OBSERVER

Banda Aceh, Nov 2 (ANTARA)- Government is expected not to privitize the country's sea resources to foreign businessmen so that the sea potentials could be maximally beneficial to Indonesian people, a fishermen association spokesman said.
"We hope the sea fisheries will remain be beneficial to the country's public, instead of privitizing the resources to foreign businessmen," M Adli Abdullah, secretary to Panglima Laot (respected traditional fishermen association head) in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) province said here on Sunday.
Indonesia should take a lesson from Iceland's failure which suffered losses following the global monetary crisis due to its main foreign exchange depending on the sea privatization of its sea resources to foreign businessmen, Adli said.
"So, after being affected by the U.S's financial crisis, the Island's economy collapsed due to the privatization of its fisheries, the traditional law expert said.
This problem was once uncovered during the Global Conference on Securing Rights of Small Scale Fisheries in Bangkok in mid October 2008.
According to him, the conference which was carried out by World Forum of Fishery People (WFFP) and International Collective Support of Fishworkers, was aimed to collecting common views among the world fishery activists in effort to overcome the problem of the small-scale fishermen in several countries.
Regarding such a problem, Adli hoped that Indonesian government could pay more attention to the small-scale fishermen in a bid to improve their welfare.
On the occasion, the traditional law expert also touched on the case of Aceh's traditional fishermen who was for several times unhumanly treated after stranding in Andaman and Nikobar Islands in India.
"The small-scale fishermen stranded abroad frequently received treatment as that imposed to hostages of wars as those happend in conflicting countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, he said.
Arrests problem always happened to Aceh's fishermen in Indian ocean, Indonesian fishermen in Australia and Papua New Guinea, Eriteria, Yaman, Senegal, Mauritania, Kenya, Gabon, and Somalia, India, Pakistan, Srilangka, Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cabodia, Chili, and Brother.***8***
