"This year marks the 50th of Indonesia-Japan relations. I hope both countries' relations can be improved further in the next 50 years," Fukuda said.

Fukuda also said in the present situation of global financial crisis, Indonesia was not being impacted as much as other countries.
"In this global financial crisis era, Indonesia must believe that it can handle the crisis well. Indonesia is in a more advantageous position than Japan because Indonesia is importing less than Japan," he said, adding that with the population it had Indonesia had a great chance to grow.
"Therefore, cooperation between Indonesia and Japan can be a contribution to efforts in the Asian region to overcome the crisis," Fukuda said.
Indonesia, said Fukuda, is one of ASEAN's leading member countries and expected to play a more important role in the association.
