MITSUBISHI TO MARKET ELECTRIC CARS IN INDONESIA
Jakarta, Nov 1 (ANTARA) - Japanese car maker Mitsubishi through PT Krama Yudha Tiga Berlian, its sole agent in Indonesia, plans to lobby the Indonesian government in connection with its plan to market its eletric car, the i-MIEV (Mitsubishi Innovative Electric Vehicle) in the country.
"In the near future we will exchange views with the government in connection with our plan to market the i-MIEV here," Krama Yudha Tiga Berlian president director Fumio Kuwayama said on the sidelines of an Indonesia-Japan Expo here on Saturday.
He said the meeting with the Indonesian government particularly with the ministries of finance, industry, and trade was very important in view of possible incentives the Indonesian government would give for environment-friendliness of the cars.
"In Japan the government gives a subsidy to environment-friendly cars," he said. He estimated the subsidy the Japanese government gave to electric car ownership reached one million yens per unit.
He predicted the new car would be marketed in Japan in the middle of next year at a price of around three million yens or above Rp300 million per unit at an assumed rate of Rp100 per yen.
He said without an incentive from the Indonesian government the price of the car would be higher than in Japan because import of completely built-up cars was subject to various taxes.
"The electric car that is equal to a 660cc car is not included in the Indonesia-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement which has scrapped import duty on cars above 3,000cc from Japan," he said.
Kuwayama considered Indonesia to be a potential market for the environment-friendly car. "The car can run for a distance of 160 kilometers on the power of one charging," he said.
Business Management Officer Takayaki Yatabe meanwhile said that the car could cut fuel cost up to one-third of the fuel cost needed by an oil-fueled car.
Kuwayama said he also planned to cooperate with electricity suppliers such as state electricity company PLN to build electricity filling stations.
He said Mitsubishi Motor Corporation was planning to produce as many as 2,000 units in Japan and targeting sales of up to 10,000 units across the world in 2010 with the European Union which implements tight policy on gas emission as the first target market.
