PRESIDENT CALLS ON PEOPLE TO BE AWARE OF NATURAL DISASTERS

Lembang, Indodnesia, Nov 1 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on the Indonesian people here on Saturday to familiarize themselves with the country's geographic conditions which were prone to natural disasters.

He said when closing the Gladian Panji Geografis gathering of nature lovers that the country sat on three plates that were always colliding and within the ring of fire.

"Some say that living in Indonesia is like living on the edge of the earth full of natural challenges, including natural disasters," he said.

He said every Indonesian citizen had to familiarize him/herself with living in the country with all its vulnarabilities.

Therefore, he called for continued efforts to inform people about ways to mitigate and overcome natural disasters so that everyone knew what he/she had to do in case of a disaster.

"Let us make every effort aimed at natural disaster mitigation through creating disaster-proof housing and building constructions in areas located above the plates or areas which are historically prone to natural disasters," he said.

To 687 participants from nature loving groups from 26 provinces in the country the head of state expressed his appreciation for having pioneered in making natural disaster mitigation and control efforts.

He said what they did was an example of patriotism and solidarity.

The participants of the gathering held at the army's special unit Kopassus compound in Situ Lembang, Bandung, West Java, had done various kinds of natural disaster mitigation exercises.

The Kopassus chief, Major General Pramono Edie Wibowo, said the training was intended to prepare groups that could help the government in case of a disaster.
