WHO Director General Praises Qatar Health Efforts
Doha, March 27 (QNA) - Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Dr Margaret Chan revealed that an agreement was reached with officials for the establishment of a center of excellence in Doha to be concerned with the fighting and monitoring of non-communicable diseases.
In an interview with News Agency (QNA) Dr. Chan revealed that Qatar will soon become a member of the WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) to become the first Arab country to join this agency which comprises 30 member countries.
WHO Director General, who visited Doha recently, has praised the great development achieved by the health sector in Qatar, saying "I congratulate the people of Qatar on the great health care they enjoy and the extent of investment by the leadership in the health and education sectors in order to raise the standard of living of the citizens."
She added that Qatar has a wise leadership and has a courageous futuristic, not only with regard to taking decisions but also to implementing them, hailing in this respect Qatar Qatar National Vision 2030, which made human beings at the centre of attention.
Dr. Chan expressed admiration for the efforts of the Supreme Council of Health aimed to improve the health system in Qatar, saying that among the 23 member countries in the World Health Organization in the Eastern Mediterranean region Qatar is one of the best countries in terms of health care.
It showed director of the World Health Organization said her visit to Doha provided an important opportunity to discuss the strengthening of cooperation between the State of Qatar and the organization in a number of areas, including the area of ??road safety and the prevention of injuries and deaths resulting from road accidents.
She said in this context that a group of experts from the World Health Organization will visit Doha during the next two months to assess the great efforts made by the State in reducing road deaths and injuries and to conduct joint exercises in this area.
WHO Director General talked about t the possibility of opening an office for the Organization in the Science and Technology Park in Qatar, upon an invitation from Qatari officials. She said the organization has received an invitation from officials in Qatar to open this office in order to promote aspects of cooperation, and the matter is still in its early stages and under study.(QNA)
