PRESIDENT OPENS INDONESIA-JAPAN EXPO 2008
Jakarta, Nov. 1 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono officially kicked off an Indonesia-Japan Expo 2008 at the Jakarta International Expo grounds in Kemayoran here on Saturday.
The Indonesia-Japan Expo 2008 is to run November 1 to 9, 2008, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Indonesia-Japan diplomatic ties.
President Yudhoyono in his address on the occasion emphasized the significance of partnership between Indonesian and Japan in responding to various challenges in the future.
Meanwhile, former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukudo, who also spoke at the opening ceremony, reaffirmed his commitment to boosting bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the future.
President Yudhoyono, First Lady Ani Yudhoyono, and Fukuda later toured the exhibition.
Among high-ranking officials present at the event were Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu, Transportation Minister Jusman Syafii Jamal, Cultural and Tourism Minister Jero Wacik, Minister/State Secretary Hatta Rajasa, as well as presidential spokesmen Dino Patti Djalal and Andi Mallarangeng.
Prior to the expo's opening ceremony, Yasuo Fukuda made a 30-minute courtesy call on President Yudhoyono.
Fukudo arrived here on Friday for a three-day visit, among other things to deliver a keynote speech at a seminar on Indonesian-Japanese relations.
Besides seminars, various exhibitions depicting the close ties between Indonesia and Japan are also to be organized during the expo.
