UNICEF FINISHES CONSTRUCTION OF 67TH SCHOOL BUILDING IN ACEH
Banda Aceh, Nov. 1 (ANTARA) - The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has finished the construction of its 67th school building in Aceh province since the 2004 tsunami disaster.
""Ujong Seuden Leupee elementary school is the 67th school building constructed by UNICEF. Up to now, the 67 school buildings have been built and handed over to the Aceh people and administration," Begna K Edo of the UNICEF Meulaboh office said in Lamno Aceh Jaya, Friday.
The UNICEF-funded school buildings are located in Aceh Jaya (31 schools), West Aceh (28 schools) and Nagan Raya (eight schools).
The UN body had been committed to constructing 346 school buildings in Aceh Province and Nias (North Sumatra Province), which were both devastated by the December 2004 tsunami.
Aceh's western coastal area, the tsunami-worst-hit area, is expected to get 109 schools from UNICEF. West Aceh District will get 34 schools, while South Aceh District and Subulussalam will receive 24 schools.
UNICEF had set up 235 temporary schools in Aceh and Nias while the construction works of permanent school buildings were going, he said.
Rahmadiah, the principal of Ujong Seuden elementary school, expressed his gratitude and happiness for the UNICEF-funded good school building which is earthquake-proof.
Around 200,000 people, mostly women and children, were killed or missing in the deadly tsunami in Aceh and Nias.
