PRESIDENT: CLOSE RI-JAPAN TIES ASSET TO FACE FUTURE CHALLENGES

Jakarta, Nov. 1 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has stated that the close ties between Indonesia and Japan will become a valuable asset for both nations in facing various challenges in the future.

"The closeness of the relations will be an asset or capital for our two nations in facing various challenges in the world such as the energy crisis, food crisis, or climate change crisis," President Yudhoyono said in his speech to open the Indonesia-Japan Expo here on Saturday.
By establishing mutually beneficial relations, Japan and Indonesia had a chance to jointly find a solution to the current global financial crisis, according to Yudhoyono.
"I am pleased to see the friendship between the two countries. Since the 1958 agreement, our bilateral relations have become stronger and deeper ," he said.
He said the sound bilateral relations were not only thanks to the efforts of the two governments, but also the peoples, including the Indonesian younger generations who had studied in Japan, such as Ginandjar Kartasasmita and businessman Rachmat Gobel.
Yudhoyono encouraged the two nations to explore cooperation in other fields, especially in the agricultural technology.
"Cooperation in the agricultural field is one of the opportunities to be explored. With the Japanese technologies and Indonesia's fertile land, I am sure we will be able to develop a food resilience and improve the welfare of farmers," he said.
Since 2005, the two countries have at least signed three important agreements, namely on strategic partnership declaration for peaceful and prosperous life, strategic partnership declaration on facing various challenges, and the economic cooperation agreement.
In his speech, President Yudhoyono also specifically mentioned former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, who was present on the occasion, as Indonesia's best friend.
Meanwhile, Fukudo, in his capacity as the chairman of the Japanese-Indonesian Association, in his remarks expressed happiness that the organization of the Indonesia-Japan Expo involved many young people.
The Indonesia-Japan Expo is to run November 1 to 9, 2008, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Indonesia-Japan diplomatic ties.
