TRADE EXPO 2008 SUCCEEDS TO DIVERSIFY MARKETS
Jakarta, Oct 31 (ANTARA) - Despite lower transaction proceeds, Trade Expo Indonesia (TEI) 2008 recorded rapid progress on diversification of emerging markets and products, Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu told the press here Friday.
Rising to 2.8 percent worth US$ 5.91 million compared to last year's total transaction proceeds, TEI 2008 reached US$ 214.17 million from 37 different products with 69 percent of the total proceeds contributed by non-traditional markets such as South America, Middle East and some African countries.
Egypt came in the first with transaction proceeds US$ 28.47 million followed by Bulgaria (US$ 12.25 million), Saudi Arabia (US$ 6.26 million), United Arab Emirates (US$ 5.28 million), and Algeria (US$ 6.85 million).
"It is understandable that there is a drop from the target since we are currently facing a financial crisis. Fortunately Indonesia has implemented a market diversification so that we can rely on non-traditional markets," the minister said.
The minister also officially disclosed that the 24th Trade Expo would be held from October 28 to November 1, 2009 at the Jakarta International Expo center.
Some evaluations that need to be done in the following event, the minister said, include visits to factories available for potential buyers, and building better booths and locations.
"Even though the event has been closed, we maintain the relations with the buyers as a follow up. Just like our previous experience, many transactions either the first or repeat orders, were made after the TEI," she said.
