MEDCO, PERTAMINA EXPLORING SYNERGIC COOPERATION

Bandung, Indonesia, Oct 31 (ANTARA) - Medco Group is exploring synergistic cooperation with Pertamina to make the state-owned oil and gas company become a world-class company and became one of the the ten biggest state companies in Asia.

"We must push Pertamina to become a world class company like state companies in other countries in Asia," Medco Group's founder Arifin Panigoro said in a lecture at the Bandung Institute of Technology here on Friday.

He said state companies with a majority share held by the state, now tended to become main player in the world's oil business referring to Petro China and CNOOC (China), SK Korea, Indian Oil, Nippon Oil and PTT (Thailand), as an example.

"It seemed the spirit of Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution is also adhered to by other countries so that their state companies are progressing," he said.

In view of that he said Pertamina also had a chance to become a world class company that also conducted explorations and provides oil and gas services in various other countries.

He said following the depletion of oil reserves in the country domestic oil companies could no longer rely on them but must expand their business to other countries.

"I saw the potentials in the world's oil and gas service were large. That is what Medco is currently doing in various countries in the Middle East while carrying the name of Indonesia, " he said.

He said five countries in the world that had the largest oil reserves reaching 716 billion barrels namely Iran, Iraq, Kuwait and Uni Arab Emirates were big potentials.

"In view of that a form of cooperation has to be sought after through synergizing the powers of Pertamina and Medco to make an Indonesia Incorporated in the oil field," he said.

He admitted that he had already explored the possibilities with Pertamina directors who shared his vision. "Medco will support Pertamina to make it a world class company. If the ideal cannot be achieved during the term of the present Pertamina directors it will be continued by future directors," he said.

He admitted it would take hard work and a political will of the government and the House of Representatives to make the idea come true. He said it was not the time for Pertamina yet to expand its explorations abroad.
