CHIEF JUSTICE MANAN RETIRES
Jakarta, Oct 31 (ANTARA) - Chief Justice Bagir Manan officially retires as chairman of the Supreme Court (MA) on Saturday, November 1, 2008.
"Today is the last day for me as the chief of MA," Manan told reporters here on Friday.
On the occasion, he expressed gratitude to reporters from print and electronic media who covered the MA activities.
"During my service as the MA chief it was not impossible for me to make mistakes or to say inappropriate words so that on this occasion I would like to apologize for such mistakes," he said.
He said that after his retirement, he would give lectures at the Bandung-based University of Padjadjaran (Unpad) where he was already a lecturer before he became chief justice.
"I want to return to the Unpad as a full-time lecturer. God willing, I will be in Bandung, West Java, early in December this year," he said.
Regarding his potential successor, Manan said all supreme court judges had the same chance to become his successor.
"All supreme judges have the same chance to be appointed as MA chief, because based on the law, supreme judges have the same rights to elect or be elected," he added.
When he was asked on whether he had his own candidate, Bagir Manan said that all the supreme judges were qualified.
He hoped that the next Supreme Court president would be able to continue his line of policy.
"I hope that the welfare of judges and civil servants would be improved, because at present their salaries are relatively low," he added.
It was reported earlier that Harifin A Tumpa, a deputy to the chief justice, would take over the post as interim MA leader, until the new chairman was elected through a plenary session.
"For the time being, Tumpa will serve as acting MA chairman because he is the most senior and oldest judge at the supreme court," an MA spokesman said.
