RI, MYANMAR EXPLORING BANKING COOPERATION
Jakarta, Oct 31 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ambassador to Myanmar has met with the governor of the Myanmar central bank Col. Than Nyein to explore cooperation between the two countries in the banking and monetary fields, especially in direct banking.
The Indonesian foreign ministry said in an official statement issued here on Friday last week's meeting was a follow-up of the meeting with the Myanmar foreign trade bank on September 23, 2008.
In connection with direct banking cooperation the Indonesian ambassador Sebastianus Sumarsono said that until now no Indonesian commercial bank representative office had been opened in Myanmar, and on the other way around.
He said because the trade condition and financial transactions between the two countries were done through a third party, which caused a high cost and no explicit record of the two countries' balance of trade.
The Myanmarese central bank governor hailed the Indonesian intention and hoped a bilateral meeting could be held to discuss the matter.
In the next stage, bank officials of the two countries could meet to discuss the issue.
It said cooperation between Myanmar and its neighboring countries especially along its border such as China, India and Thailand, had long been going on and therefore it was not impossible for Indonesian commercial banks to open branches in Myanmar.
Governor Than Nyein said Indonesian commercial banks could use book transfer facility for transactions in the dollar or other currencies in cooperation with Myanmarese partners such as MFTB, the Myanmar Economic Bank (MEB) and the Myanmarese Investment Commercial Bank (MICB).
At the conclusion of the meeting the Indonesian ambassador called for using the 60th anniversary of the relations between the two countries December 27, 2009 for the banking cooperation.
He said the Indonesian embassy was ready to facilitate meetings between the relevant parties from the two countries particularly the Myanmarese central bank and several commercial banks in that country.
