TSUNAMI VICTIMS REJECT TSUNAMI DRILL

Banda Aceh, Oct 31 (ANTARA) - A number of tsunami victims in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) province on Friday rejected "tsunami drill" simulation plan because it would only make them recall the December 26, 2004's disaster which claimed the lives of their family members and other hundreds of thousands of people.

"It is not the time for the simulation to be conducted because we are still traumatized with the disaster that had claimed the lives of our family members, and psychologically we are going to be burdened by the simulation," Aris, one of the tsunami victims, said here on Friday.

He said he would go to other far-away village to evade the tsunami simulation which was scheduled to be conducted on Sunday, November 2, 2008.

"I agree if the simulation is given to the people in other province which has not experienced the tragedy on December 26, 2004. We need physical serenity, not unnecessary activities which even draw our memory back to the past disaster," Aris said.

Meanwhile, Wahidin, a Lampoh Daya villager, said he was annoyed to hear about the irksome simulation which was planned to be conducted on Sunday.

"I am really annoyed by the news that a tsunami simulation will be conducted in Aceh. I should have forgotten the disaster that claimed more than 15 people in my family but the simulation will disturb my mind," Wahidin said.

Around 4,000 people in Banda Aceh will be involved in the simulation which is to be conducted in an effort to increase their knowledge and alertness about future possible disaster.

The tsunami that hit Indonesia and other countries in December 2004 was a major natural disaster that prompted an unprecedented international relief effort.

International organizations in partnership with local governments forged a successful partnership not only to help the survivors, but to set forth the essential conditions for sustainable development in the framework of a market economy.
