Tests show production of 3 Thai commercial egg farms melamine-free

BANGKOK, Oct 31 (TNA) - Melamine was not found in eggs produced by
Thailand's top three commercial egg-farming companies, tests conducted by
the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revealed this week.

Deputy Minister of Public Health Vicharn Minchainant said the FDA tested
seven items of egg samples from three major domestic egg producers.

The three companies are Quality Meat Co. producer of Dr. Hen Eggs,
Rungarun Farm Co. (C-Herb Eggs) and Bangkok Food Products Co. (CP Eggs).

The safety in Thai eggs benefited both domestic consumption and exports,
as it assured both domestic and overseas customers that Thai eggs were
safe, added Mr. Vicharn.

Meanwhile, FDA Secretary-General Pipat Yingseri said the FDA continued to
conduct strict tests of Thailand's food products when there was a new
report of any food contaminated by melamine.

Currently, the FDA has already conducted melamine testing in 1,123 samples
of various foods and food products in Thailand. The test results of 962
samples were known and only seven samples were found tainted with melamine
over the standard limit.

The awareness of melamine contamination in eggs began when melamine was
found in eggs imported into Hong Kong from China's largest egg producer,
the Dalian Hanwei Enterprise Group.

Dr. Pipat said it was possible such eggs could come from hens eating
fishmeal and soybean meal to increase protein. (TNA)
