JAKARTA URGED TO PROVIDE SPECIAL TRANSPORT MODALITY FOR BLIND

Jakarta, Oct. 31 (ANTARA) - Blind people in Jakarta have urged the capital city's authority to provide them with a special means of transportation to help their mobility.

"We have so far felt being discriminated, because a lot facilities have been built but not many of them giving us access to use them, including means of transportation," said Bayu, the chairman of the Jakarta chapter of the Indonesian Blind People Association (Pertuni).

The existing transport modality in Jakarta was not user-friendly for the blind, he said. He further complained that even the drivers and other passengers were care less to the blind.

"We know it better because we are frequent users of public transports and often walk, because we cannot drive," he said.

He also criticized bad attitude of some drivers and motorcyclist on the streets as he was bumped or almost hit for several times while crossing the streets.

"I was once scolded by a motorcyclist while crossing the street on the zebra cross and pointing my white stick before crossing," he said.

He said the Trans Jakarta busway has so far been helpful because it uses audio to inform the passengers about bus stops, but there are still some shortcomings.
