TIGHTER SECURITY IN THREE PROVINCES FOR BALI I BOMBERS' EXECUTION
Jakarta, Oct 31 (ANTARA) - The National Police Headquarters has instructed police in three provinces to step up security in the run up to and after the execution of Bali I bombers Amrozi, Mukhlas alias Ali Gufron, and Imam Samudra.
"The three provinces are East Java, Central Java, and Banten," National Police Headquarters public relations division chief Insp Gen Abubakar Nataprawira told the press here on Friday.
He said Central Java police were asked to intensify security because the execution would be carried out there and the prison of the three death row convicts was also located in the province.
The police in East Java and Banten were instructed to tighten security in their respective areas because Amrozi, Mukhlas and Imam Samudra hail from the two provinces.
"The National Police Headquarters has not instructed the declaration of a level-I alert status in those provinces but anticipatory steps must be taken," Abubakar Nataprawira said.
He said security needed to be intensified especially at vital objects in the three provinces such as foreign representative offices, shopping malls, bus terminals, railway stations, and houses of worship.
Asked about the exact date of the execution, Abubakar refused to comment but said the police were ready to put Amrozi et al before a firing squad any time.
"The exact date is the Attorney General's Office's decision, but the police are ready for the execution to be carried out any time," Abubakar said, adding that the firing squads would be from the Central Java police.
The Attorney General's Office (AGO) in Jakarta announced recently that convicted Bali I bombers Amrozi et al would be executed early November, 2008 in Nusakambangan, Cilacap district, Central Java.
AGO spokesman Jasam Pandjaitan said death-row convicts Amrozi, Mukhlas and Imam Samudra had pursued the last existing legal avenue unsuccessfully and the result of the process was now legally binding.
"The three did not apply for pardon so the execution can be carried out soon," he said, adding "Their execution will be carried out early November."
