NHRC Plays Key Role in Promoting and Protecting Human Rights

Geneva, March 05 (QNA) - The State of Qatar has underlined that Qatar National Human Rights Committee plays a key role in the promotion and protection of human rights and public freedoms and in dissemination of the human rights culture in the country. It enjoys financial and administrative autonomy. Qatar National Human Rights Committee is among the national institutions for human rights which are subject to the Paris principles 1991 and classified as Class (A) by the International Coordinating Committee of National Institutions for the promotion and protection of human rights (ICC). This came in a speech delivered by the Second Secretary of Qatar's Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office in Geneva, at the 22nd second session of the Human Rights Council being held in Geneva from 25 February 25 to March 22, under item No. of the Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders. Al Hammadi added that the Qatari National Committee for Human Rights was set up in 2002, within the context of the overall progress of the state where Qatar had adopted a reform project based on modernizing the legislative and institutional structure in the state. He stressed that the National Human Rights Committee has taken firm and advanced steps to reach a privileged position on the regional and international levels, thanks to the continued support provided by the Qatari wise leadership and its responsiveness wise with various human rights issues. Al Hamadi also referred to the Doha hosting of the headquarters of the Secretariat of the Arab Network of National Institutions for Human Rights, which aims to support the capacity of the Arab national institutions for Human Rights.(QNA)
