40 killed, 200 injured in serial blasts in Assam

Guwahati, Oct 30 (PTI) Over 40 people were killed and more than 200 injured Thursday in 13 serial bomb blasts triggered by suspected United Liberation Front of Asom (U.L.F.A.) and Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami (H.U.J.I.) militants in crowded areas of lower Assam, including capital Guwahati.

The bombs went off simultaneously at around 11.30 AM
IST mostly in markets of Kamrup, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon and
Barpeta districts, official sources said.

In Guwahati's Kamrup area, a bomb exploded in
Ganeshguri-Dispur near the high-security capital complex
housing the Assembly building, another in front of the
district's Deputy Commissioner's office, the third at Paltan
Bazar and the fourth at Fancy Bazar, the sources said.

While 25 were killed in the four blasts in Guwahati,
10 others died in Kokrajhar, three in Barpeta and two in
Bongaigaon, they said.

The death toll is likely to rise as more bodies were
suspected to be buried in the debris at the blast sites, the
sources said, adding the condition of the several of the
injured is serious. PTI ESB
