PRESIDENT CALLS FOR STRENGTHENING OF NATIONAL CHARACTER

Semarang, C Java, Oct 30 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on his countrymen to build a strong national character to face global challenges.
The president made the call in a national cultural address on National Cultural Strategy in Responding and Viewing the Globalization Era, in a commemoration of the 51st anniversary of the Diponegoro University (Undip) here on Thursday.
"Sometimes we reduce the meaning of culture to a mere art, but in fact it has the value, trust, idea, view, rationality, and character of a nation," Yudhoyono said.
In his 45-minute address, the head of state explained a cultural approach to a better national development.
Yudhoyono said since the Republic of Indonesia was established, the country continued to face big and small problems but it remained strong and undeterred, because of its strong and deep seated culture.
"We have encountered big and small tests and challenges but we remain strong because of an invisible power that we call our national culture," he said.
According to the president, the invisible power accompanied by natural and human resources could be used to develop future Indonesia.
The president said Indonesia would have achieved much progress if the three national pillars of self-reliance, high competitiveness, and civilization as the national character were being strengthened.
"If we strengthen these three pillars, we will be able to become a strong developed country in the 21st century because we have the power and energy," Yudhoyono said.
But he added that success would not come by itself without hard work.
He said that with the current globalization it did not mean that the people's interest would be sacrificed.
"The government moral responsibility in whatever condition is to protect the weak in their efforts to have their health, education, and basic necessities satisfied," the president said.
