GOLKAR: PORN BILL DOES NOT RESTRICT FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION
Jakarta, Oct 30 (ANTARA) - The Golkar Party House faction said on Thursday the bill on pornography does not restrict freedom of expression.
"The bill on the other hand maintains freedom of expression to stay in line with good norms and behaviour, and prevents negative and excessive acts against women and youngsters, " Irsyad Sudiro of Golkar party said during a House plenum.
On the occasion, the faction also made it clear that bill is not threat to national unity.
"Therefore, it will not harm the people's life," he added.
People's life containing tradition and religious values, Sudiro said, will always be protected and preserved.
Meanwhile, head of the Democratic Pioneer Star faction Ali Mochtar Ngabalin said the porn bill only accommodates Moslem interest for the 2009 General Elections.
The House plenary session was presided over by House Speaker Agung Laksono and attended by several ministers.
The ministers were Religious Affairs Minister M. Maftuh Basyuni, State Minister for Women's Empowerment Meutia Farida Hatta Swasono, Justice and Human Rights Minister Andi Mattalata and Information and Communications Minister Muhammad Nuh.
The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) and the Prosperous Peace Party (PDS) factions refused to pass the bill, and resorted to a walkout.
