KADIN CALLS ON BUSINESSES NOT TO BE EGOISTIC AMID ECONOMIC TURMOIL
Jakarta, Oct 30 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) called on businessmen not to egoistically capitalize on the current fluctuations of currency exchange rates for their own individual interest.
The appeal was made by Kadin Chairman MS Hidayat after attending a meeting with President Susilo Bambang Yudhohono together with economic ministers and economic observers at the State Secretariat on Wednesday.
He said that Kadin was calling on its members to take a joint step in safeguarding Indonesia's economy from the impact of the on-going financial meltdown.
"I suggest that all business players should adopt a patriotic attitude and not to take benefits in the current global financial crisis for their own individual interests," Hidayat said.
In the meeting with the government and economic observers Hidayat explained the hope of business owners for the government to guarantee their funds deposited at banks.
In the three-hour meeting, the Kadin chairman said, they also discussed a discourse on a tax amnesty, particularly its advantage or disadvantage if the government introduced it.
He said that during the meeting he also reported to the president the result of a meeting of 15 major banks on October 28, 2008 which supported a Kadin's proposal for a full guarantee (on deposit).
Hidayat said that the meeting with 15 major banks also agreed to lower banks interest rate to about 2-3 percent in order to boost the development of the real sector as part of the effort to solve the crisis. The present high interest rates could not help develop the real sector, he added.
Bambang Soesatyo of Kadin said on Sunday the chamber of commerce also asked the government to provide a guarantee for exporters' dollar foreign currency deposit at the national banks.
"Exporters must be assured that their foreign currencies will be safe if they keep them at national banks. Therefore, the government must assure that our banking system is securer than those of other countries," the Kadin chairman for fiscal and monetary affairs said.
Soesatyo said that exporters had expressed concern to see the weakening position of the rupiah over the past week, which happened to drop to over Rp11,000 against the US dollar.
