HOUSE SPEAKER POINTS THUMB UP TO ANTI-GRAFT BODY

Jakarta, Oct 30 (ANTARA) - Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Agung Laksono gave a thumb-up to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) for its boldness to name former Band Indonesia (BI) deputy governor Aulia Pohan a suspect in the transfer of Rp100 billion BI funds to a number of legislators illegally.

"We have to give a thumb-up to the KPK for its gut to name him a suspect. It has carried out its tasks without discrimination. I have to appreciate it," Laksono said after the KPK named a suspect the father of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's daughter-in-law.

He said that the KPK's decision indicated the country's seriousness in fighting against corruption. "The naming as suspect of Pohan emphasizes the country's seriousness in fighting corruption," he said.

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) named Aulia Pohan, a suspect on Wednesday in the illegal BI funds transfer worth Rp100 billion to certain legislators several years ago.

He was named a suspect together with other former BI officials Aslim Tadjuddin, Maman H. Soemantri and Bunbunan Hutapea.

"The KPK has named Aulia Pohan together with Aslim Tadjuddin, Maman H. Soemantri and Bunbunan Hutapea as suspects in the illegal BI funds transfer case," KPK Chairman Antasari Azhar told the press.

The anti-graft body began questioning a number of witnesses and sent invitations to additional witnesses on Wednesday (Oct 29).

Antasari Azhar said the naming of the suspects was based on the results of examinations and investigations and a number of facts revealed in the court trials of other suspects.

Former BI governor Burhanuddin Abdullah was sentenced to five years in jail on Wednesday in the the same case.

The KPK chairman said the decision was taken professionally and free from any political pressure.

"The KPK is doing its job professionally without any political pressures from any side," he said. ***3***
