SENDANGBIRU DEVELOPMENT PROJECT FEARED TO DESTROY ECOSYSTEM

Malang, Oct 29 (ANTARA) - Development plans to be carried out around the Sendangbiru port, Sumbermanjing Wetan subdistrict, and in Malang regency are feared to destroy the ecosysytem and habitat of endangered species in Sempu island.

Head of Profauna Indonesia, Indonesian society for the protection of wild animals and their habitats, Rosek Nursahid admitted that the fear arose since the location was near to Sempu island which is a natural reserve for endangered fauna and flora since 1928.

"We expect the central and local governments to make a development plan in Sendangbiru while protecting Sempu island," he said.

He hoped the government had already made a good plan applied to regional regulations as a foundation for the development plan.

Recently Profauna together with the Indonesian Forum for Environment (Walhi) also opposed the plan of turning Sempu island into an open tourism area with various facilities by the Malang regency administration.

Sempu island is inhabitated by 51 different animals including 36 birds with 144 local and migrated species from China, 12 mammals, three reptiles with 223 kinds of plants consisting of 144 genus and 60 families.

The island which covers 877 hectares of land owns exotic natural beauties like the Segara Anakan, Tawar Lele lake and Longbeach.
