HOUSE AGREES ON 12 BILLS ON PROVINCES AND SUBDISTRICTS/CITIES

Jakarta, Oct 29 (ANTARA) -The House of Representatives on Wednesday agreed to 12 bills on the establishment of provinces and subdistricts/cities.

"Of the proposed 17 bills, 12 were approved for passage into laws," Vice Chairman of the House Commission II Eka Santosa said in a plenary session.

The three bills, will be deliberated further in the House second plenum for 2008-2009. The bills are for the formation of the Meranti Subdistrict in Riau Province, Maibrat regency in Central Papua Province and Tapanuli province.

The rest are required to complete the administrative requirements and technical conditions related to area coverage. The bills are about the formation of Brastagi regency in North Sumatra and Mandau regency in Riau province.

"We require the governor and the regents of the main province and regencies to meet the administrative requirements soon," Santosa added.

Meanwhile, Home Ministry Mardiyanto expressed President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's hope for forming the new provinces, regencies/cities.

"The regional autonomy is expected to develop the region's creativity as well as efficiency in managing their potentials," the Minister said, adding that it can also speed up the region's economic growth.
