Laos, Vietnam cooperate in preventing human trafficking

Vientiane (VNA) -Female officials from Laos and Vietnam attended a conference in Vientiane to discuss methods of cooperation in the fight against human trafficking, particularly involving women and children.

The conference was co-chaired by Sisay Leudethmounsone, President of the
Lao Women's Union and Dang Thi Ngoc, Vice Chairwoman of the Vietnam Women's
Union .

The two sides informed each other of the current situation regarding
trafficking in women and children, as well as recent developments in this
area.

The participants also discussed the two countries' cooperation and sharing
of information in the ongoing fight against human trafficking, particularly
where women and minors are involved.

In 2004, the Mekong sub-region countries signed a memorandum of
understanding (MOU) on joining together in the fight against the trade in
women and children across the region.

Laos and Vietnam expect to sign a similar MOU to establish a legal
corridor to strengthen cooperation in combating human trafficking in either
2009 or 2010.-Enditem
