RI, TIMOR LESTE SIGN COOPERATION AGREEMENT IN FORESTRY SECTOR
Jakarta, Oct 29 (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Timor Leste signed Wednesday a bilateral cooperation agreement in the forestry sector covering rehabilitation, research, eradication of illegal logging practices, and development of timber estates.
Indonesian Forestry Minister MS Kaban said after the signing of the agreement at the Forestry Ministry here the agreement was the first of its kind signed by the two neighboring states in the forestry sector.
As a follow up to the cooperation agreement, Indonesia, Timor Leste and Brazil would look into the possibility of trilateral cooperation in the forestry field, he said.
To be sure, the bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Timor Leste was not merely technical cooperation but also was part of reconciliation efforts, he said.
"Moreover, the leaders of the two countries have harmonious relations," he said.
Timor Leste Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Mariano Assanami Sabino meanwhile said Indonesia played an important role in promoting his country's development particularly in the forestry sector.
He expressed hope Indonesia would assist Timor Leste in rehabilitating its forests, reducing land erosion, revitalizing forestry products, managing river basin areas, and providing education and training for Timor Leste forestry officers.
Timor Leste seceded from Indonesia following the UN-sponsored ballot in 1999 in which the majority of East Timorese people opted for independence from the latter.
