THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS BLOCKING SEGMENT OF E JAVA'S NORTHERN COASTAL ROAD
Banyuwangi, E Java, Oct 29 (ANTARA) - Thousands of students of an Islamic boarding school still blockaded the segment of East Java's northern coastal road at Sukorejo village in Situbondo district until Wednesday demanding Situbondo district head Ismunarso resign for his alleged part in a graft case.
The students of the Salafiyah Safi'iyah Islamic boarding school also urged President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to issue a permit to police to investigate Ismunarso as a suspect in the case.
Previously, the president issued a permit to police to investigate Ismunarso as a witness in the questioning of eight suspects in the graft case that has inflicted a loss of Rp45.750 billion to the state.
"We will leave the scene if Ismunarso is ready to come to meet us, offer an apology for his wrongdoings, quit as Situbondo district head and later undergo legal process as a detainee in the graft case involving Rp45.7590 billion in regional cash," Kyai Haji Fawaid As'ad, chief of the Islamic boarding school, said.
He said a series of rallies organized by non-governmental organizations and the public to demand Ismunarso's resignation had never received attention from the police.
Therefore, it was reasonable if thousands of students of the Islamic boarding school took to the street to protest against the slow process of naming Ismunarso as a suspect in the case, he said.
