Mediation on Darfur Voices Commitment to Peace Process

Doha, January 20 (QNA) - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, HE Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud, and HE Aichatou Mindaoudou, Joint AU-UN Special Representative and Acting Head of UNAMID, who also serves as Joint AU-UN Chief Mediator for Darfur ad interim made the following statement: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, HE Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud, and HE Aichatou Mindaoudou , Joint AU-UN Special Representative and Acting Head of UNAMID opened in Doha a round of negotiations between the delegation of the Government of the Republic of Sudan, chaired by Dr. Amin Hassan Omar, Minister of State in the Presidency and Head of the Darfur Follow-up Office and the head of the Office pursue peace in Darfur, and the delegation of the Sudanese Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) chaired by Arko Suleiman Dahia, the Movement's Deputy President. This round of negotiations took place within the framework of the declaration made in Doha on October, 22 2012 by the Sudanese Government and JEM according to which, the parties committed themselves to the immediate cessation of hostilities and return to negotiation table in order to achieve a comprehensive settlement of the conflict on the basis of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur. The mediation reiterated its commitment to work towards achieving a comprehensive peace, and help the parties reach an agreement to end the conflict and the suffering of the people in Darfur. The two parties reaffirmed as well their commitment to achieving a final peaceful solution to the conflict in Darfur. (QNA)
