PRESIDENT HAILS ANTI-DISCRIMINATION LAW

Jakarta, Oct 28 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono hailed the ratification of the new Anti-Discrimination Law by the House of Representatives.

In his speech to mark the 80th anniversary of Youth Pledge Day at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah here on Tuesday, the President said the law would promote solidarity and strengthen national unity.

"The House Speaker just told me that the law had just been ratified. Thank God we now have a law that promotes national solidarity and unity," he said.

The president reminded that Indonesia is one nation that could not be divided along racial, religious, tribal and other lines of differences.

He also reminded that the present system of government that was decentralized and gave autonomy to regions must not eventually developed into regionalism.

"This is our choice, the best way to run the state and the government. Unless it is done well it will cause problems," he said.

The president meanwhile expressed his appreciation to the youths that had never been separated from the country's history.

Indonesia, however, is now facing a new challenge namely globalization with all its bad impacts such as the current financial crisis.

He called on the youths to play a role in meeting the challenges including partcipating in developing a new economic system that was proof of the impact of a crisis.

"With unity, solidarity and hard work we will be able to overcome any problem," he said.***
