40 INDONESIAN RAIL ACCIDENT INVESTIGATORS GET TRAINING ON TRANSPORT SAFETY

Jakarta, Oct 28 (ANTARA) - As many as 40 Indonesian train accident investigators from the National Transport Safety Committee and other sectors of the state railway company started following a training on safety rail transportation from Oct 27 to 31, 2008 at Sari Pan Pacific Hotel in Central Jakarta.

"The course held under a cooperation between the Indonesian and Australian governments to improve transportation safety. I am confident that the participants will benefit enormously from this course", secretary of the Australian Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Michael taylor, said here Tuesday in his remarks marking the opening of the training.

He said that the participants will also be given lessons on investigative processes as well as on effective ways of interaction with NTSC investigators in ensuring safety measures in early investigation processes.
"We are specifically supporting the improvement of investigators' skills in conducting an investigation. The relevant human resources need first to be improved," he said.
The course was part of the Australian government's bilateral aid package to Indonesia worth AUS$ 24 million. The package was mentioned in the Memorandum of Understanding signed by Indonesian Minister of Tansportation Jusman Syafi'i Djamal and Australian Minister of Infrastructure Anthony Albanese in Jakarta early in January 2008.

Meanwhile, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT), Tatang Kurniadi, said that the committee had received AUS$ 4 million from the aid package. He said 540 investigators followed the training in Indonesia, and three in Australia.

"We intend to send more of them for training. We hope transportation accident investigators will be available throughout the country to speed up investigations of accidentt," he said.
The bilateral cooperation may cover a period of four years, covering aviation, shipping, railway trains, and land transportation in Indonesia.
