WHCC DECLARERS CULTURAL HERITAGE PROTECTION
Solo, Central Java, Oct 28 (ANTARA) - A two-day World Heritage Cities Conference (WHCC) from October 27-28 in Central Java cultural city of Solo concluded on Tuesday with a declaration to intensively save and protect cultural heritages.
Called "Solo Declaration, it was read out by Surakarta mayor Joko Widodo before the participants of the conference here on Tuesday.
It said in the declaration that cultural diversity and the understanding of multi-culture should lay a groundwork for the creation of harmonious relations and the solution of various conflicts around the world.
"Cultural heritage should be conserved because it gives an aspiration and motivation for its future development," Joko said as he read the declaration.
The declaration also shed a light on urban development following urbanization in various cities around the world.
Therefore the delegates participating in the conference were expected to encourage their respective governments to pay attention to cultural balance by conserving, protecting, and making use of it as the right assent.
Meanwhile, Organization of World Heritage Cities of Euro-Asia Section (OWHC) secretary general Denis Richard said the Solo Declaration was a guideline for all members of the OWHC to protect the cultural heritage.
"It will take a long time apply what has been declared but at least the participating delegates have understood what have to be done about preservation and protection of cultural heritage in the future," Dneis Richard said.
He added that from the declaration, the participants of the conference would be able to improve inter-city cooperation in the development of tourist sectors.
"This is the beginning of our joint effort to preserve and protect cultural heritage, but the most important thing for us is to implement the declaration in our respective cities," Richard said.
In his opening address on Monday, Foreign Affairs Minister Hasan Wirayuda said the World Heritage Cities Conference was expected to create an understanding of civilization and culture.
"Through this conference we hope not only better relations and cooperation between heritage cities in the world can be created but also understanding between civilizations, culture and religions," Wirajuda said.
The international conference, he added, can increase cooperation in investment and trade.***
