ANTASARI: KPK'S PERFORMANCE NOT SLOWING DOWN ECONOMY

Jakarta, Oct 28 (ANTARA) - Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Antasari Azhar said that the performance of his agency in corruption eradication will not slow down the economy, but instead will help create a just and prosperous society in this country.

He made the remarks in his scientific oration during the commemoration of the 42nd anniversary of the Pancasila University at the Jakarta Convention Center on Tuesday.
Antasari disagreed with some assumptions that the task of KPK of investigating and capturing corruptors had deterred those in the power elite to use funds in their own budget.

He reiterated that one of the goals of the KPK was to help improve and revive the economy, thus improving the life of the people.

While no research had been conducted on the link between corruption and economic growth, the result of a survey said that if certain country has become too corrupt, the higher the infrastructure coast it has to pay.

In the meantime, another survey reported that corrupt practices will add more discrepancy in income and social welfare of a country with rampant corruption.
According to Antasari, such negative stigma that Indonesia was one of the countries with rampant corruption should be changed. At present, Indonesia is still included in the corruption perception index score (IPK) of 2.6 in 2008, while it is actually an improvement this country has made to last year's score of 2.3.

However IPK is a picture of corrupt level which included 180 countries with scores determined on the basis of surveys conducted by a number of independent agencies. Ten is the best score, as it means the country is really clean.
IPK is issued every year by Transparency International, a non-governmental organization with headquarters in Germany, with affiliations in many countries including Indonesia.
