GOVERNMENT'S SUPPORT NEEDED TO PROTECT CULTURAL HERITAGES
Solo, Central Java, Oct. 28 (ANTARA) - The support and commitment of the central and local governments are needed to help protect world cultural heritages, according to Denis Richard, the secretary general of the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC) of Euro-Asia Section.
The common problem facing various heritage cities in the world was a shortage of investment needed to protect and maintain cultural heritage objects because political leaders or decision makers considered them unimportant, he said in a press conference at the closing of the OWHC Asia-Euro Section Conference here on Tuesday.
He believed the awareness and understanding of governments and people on the importance of protecting and preserving cultural heritages, must be improved.
The two-day conference's participants issued a declaration on their commitment to intensify efforts to protect and preserve the heritages, he said.
They also called for intensified cooperation among heritage cities and the cities should develop tourism which could give economic benefits as well as promote tolerance and freedom, he said.
Meanwhile, Laretna T Adhisakti of the University of Gadjah Mada said earlier that a special body needed to be set up to deal with the protection and preservation of cultural heritages.
