STUDENTS RALLY IN SUPPORT OF PORNOGRAPHY BILL

Jakarta, Oct. 28 (ANTARA) - Tens of members of the Student Liberation Movement (GMP) staged a rally to support the Bill on Pornography in front of Parliament Building here on Tuesday. A similar demonstration was also held in Serang, Banten, on the same day.

All forms of pornography and pornographic acts must be eliminated from Indonesia, Erwin, one of the protesters, said.

He hoped the House of Representatives (DPR) would support the implementation of Islamic laws in the country.

A number of mass organizations that were against or for the Bill on Pornography had staged rallies in front of the Parliament Building in Jakarta as well as in other cities over the past few weeks.

In Serang, Banten Province, around 300 people rallied on Tuesday to support the bill and urge the DPR to pass it into law.

The protesters comprising women and university students, were grouped in the Alliance of University Students Supporting the Bill on Pornography.

They expressed their worries over rampant pornography in the print, electronic and cyber media. Therefore, they urged the DPR to pass the Bill into aw to help solve the pornography problem.

"Criminal acts such as rape, sexual harassment and exploitation of women are very worrying right now. We must do something. The Bill on pornography must be passed," Muchtar Anam Effendi, the rally's coordinator, said in Serang.
