CORRUPTION ERADICATION MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY IMPROVEMENTS IN PUBLIC SERVICES

Jakarta, Oct 28 (ANTARA) - Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Chairman Antasari Azhar said efforts to combat corruption should be conducted in parallel with improvements in various public services in the community.

He made the remark in his speech presented in commemorating the 42nd anniversary of Pancasila University at the Jakarta Convention Center here on Tuesday.
According to him, the public services sector constituted a vital aspect in the assessment of perception on the level of corruption in a country conducted by a number of international independent agencies.
If public services in a certain country are seen to be clean and transparent, many parties will opine that the level of corruption in that country is also low. Consequently, more investors would be prepared to sink their capital in the country and thus the people concerned would have better chances to prosper.

He hoped that in the present globalization era marked by the `free-trade system, Indonesian nationals would have the courage to enter overseas markets and not only perform in the domestic markets.

However, Antasari also said the free-trade system would also make the government feel restricted in protecting certain domestic activities in the interest of the people in the country.

He also recounted his experience when making a sudden inspection on a certain government agency in the context of public services. As a result, many sides really complained as they had no opportunity to arrange anything through bribes as short cuts.

Antasari opined this also indicated that corrupt practices were deeply rooted in government agencies which would inflict losses on the state if no efforts were made to combat it.

"If we pin our hope on an agency where corruption is rife, it will certainly trigger and create a high-cost economy in this country which directly hampers the government's efforts to improve the prosperity and social welfare of the people," he said.
"Hence corruption should not be left uncorrected in this country, if all of us want to build this nation to be on a par with advanced countries," he said.
