RISE IN TRANSACTIONS AT JAKARTA MONEY CHANGERS
Jakarta, Oct 28 (ANTARA) - The weakening of the rupiah against the US dollar in the last two days has boosted foreign exchange transactions at money changers in Jakarta.
"Today, our dollar sale transactions exceeded our dollar purchase transactions. On Monday, sale and purchase transactions were balanced," Kanti, a teller at PT Ayu Masagung money changer said here on Tuesday.
PT Ayu Masagung sold one US dollar for Rp11,000 and bought one US dollar at Rp10.750 on Tuesday.
Kanti and other tellers at other money changers said their turnovers reached an average of Rp5 billion a day in the past two days.
In the runup to the closing in the evening, money changer tellers still catered to customers who wanted to conduct transactions.
"I knew that at noon the US dollar was sold at Rp12,000. It so happened I had a US dollar deposit which I bought at Rp9,200 per dollar two years ago. So I decided to sell it now," a customer who refused to be named said.
He said he decided to sell his dollars because he thought the dollar had reached its highest rate against the rupiah on Tuesday.
