LANDSLIDE BURIES SEVEN HOUSES, CUTS OFF TRANS SULAWESI HIGHWAY

Tolitoli, Central Sulawesi, Oct. 28 (ANTARA) - A landslide triggered by incessant downpours has buried seven houses at Laulalang village, Ambotuban, Tolitoli District, and cut off Trans Sulawesi highway.

"According to a provisional report that we have received, seven houses were buried by a landslide in Ambotuban," according to Arif, a staff member of the Tolitoli administration office, said here on Tuesday.

The landslide most probably occurred last Sunday when heavy rains fell in Tolitoli where floods had also happened, he said.

Ambotuban was located around 80 km north of Tolitoli city, he said. Overland access to the village was cut off as a bridge located on the Trans Sulawesi Highway and connecting Tolitoli and Buol district collapsed after being hit by floodwaters.

"Yesterday, I wanted to go to Ambotuban, but I could not make it because there was a landslide," Herman, a university student, said.

It was reported on Monday that hundreds of houses were inundated and land transportation connecting Tolitoli and Buol District was cut off due to a landslide and fallen trees. The landslide occurred at a spot known as KM Empat north of Tolitoli.

"For the time being , only motorbikes can pass the landslide-hit road. The landslide was a big one and several trees fell and blocked the road," Uyo Hamid, a resident who had passed the landslide site, said here on Monday.

An electricity pole also fell and led to a power blackout for several hours in northern Tolitoli late Sunday.

The floods also inundated a number of school buildings. Students of state elementary school SDN 10 Tolitoli were forced to cancel their class activities and were mobilized to clean up their class rooms.

Among the worst-hit areas are Anoa and Sidodadi housing complexes, Magamu Street, Gadarmun Hangkiho street, as well as parts of Panasakan and Tambun.

The current flooding is the fourth hitting Tolitoli this year.
