RI PLANS TO CULTIVATE 10 THOUSAND H OF HYBRID COTTON IN 2009
Jakarta, Oct 28 (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Agriculture is planning to cultivate 10 thousand hectares of hybrid cotton plantations in South Sulawesi, a senior ministry official said.
The Ministry's Plantation Director General Achmad Mangga Barani said on Monday that the cultivation of the hybrid cotton seeds was expected to increase Indonesia's cotton production.
"At present the national average production per hectare of cotton is only about two tons. With the hybrid seeds it is expected that production will be increased to three tons per hectare," he said.
Besides in South Sulawesi, hybrid cotton plantations will also be carried out in other provinces such as in Central Java, East Java, Yogyakarta, East Nusa Tenggara, and West Nusa Tenggara, he said.
Barani said that farmers would be provided with 100 percent hybrid seeds from China and with 25 percent fertilizers. Thus, farmers will bear only 75 percent of the fertilizer prices.
The director general said imports of hybrid seeds could be carried out only for two years, after which seeds should be produced at home.
He said that hybrid cotton development had been carried out since last year so that this year was the last one for industries to import seeds.
The acreage of cotton plantations in the country this year is recorded at 20,000 hectares and it is expected to reach 25,000 hectares next year which among others will be developed in South Sulawesi, Java and Nusa Tenggara.
