RI YOUNGER GENERATION'S LOVE FOR NATIONAL LANGUAGE WANING: EDUCATIONIST

Purwokerto, Indonesia, Oct 27 (ANTARA) - The love for Bahasa Indonesia among the country's younger generation has now started to wane, according to Dodot Widodo, an academician at the Muhammadiyah University said.

"It is deplorable that the younger generation's mastery of the Indonesian language today is poor," Widodo, a lecturer at the university's faculty of pedagogy and teachers' training, said here Monday.
Young Indonesians today were more attracted to the Betawi (native Jakarta) dialect or foreign languages.
He said this condition indicated that the younger generation were no longer proud of Bahasa Indonesia, although in reality it was the country's language of unity.
"It seems that their love for Bahasa Indonesia has started to wane, although this language indicates our national identity," he said.
In this relation, he said a language indicates the characteristic of a nation.
"The more so because the Indonesian people are known for politeness and kindness," Widodo said.
Therefore, he added that the love for the Indonesian language should be instilled in the younger generation through the participation of their families and environments.
"We have to keep in mind that their interest in the Indonesian language will continue to wane if we fail to make them aware of the importance of the language as their national identity," Widodo said.
