SOME 3,500 INDONESIAN FLORA, FAUNA SPECIES ALMOST EXTINCT : MINISTER

Palembang, Indonesia, Oct 27 (ANTARA) - Some 3,500 species of Indonesia's 28,000 flora and fauna species in Sumatra and Kalimantan are now almost extinct, according to a cebinet minister.

Indonesia had a lot to offer to tourists, Culture and Tourism Minister Jero Wacik said in his written speech read out by the minister's senior adviser on economic, science and technology affairs, Thamrin Bachri, at the 4th International Ecotourism Business Forum (Ecotourbiz 2008) here on Monday.

Participants of the ecotourism business forum included representatives of Japan, China, Germany, Spain, the United States, Britain, Switzerland, and Cambodia.

Indonesia has 500 mountains for mountain climbing sports, tropical rain forests which are habitats of rare flora and fauna species, the world's best diving spots and beautiful beaches for surfing, he said.

South Sumatra, for instance, is one of Indonesia's 34 provinces which offer beautiful tourist attractions such as Lake Ranau, water falls, and Mount Dempo.
Palembang, the capital of South Sumatra Province, is famous for its Musi River, Indonesia's longest river.

A number of Indonesia's endangered species such as Komodo dragon in Komodo Isle (East Nusa Tenggara Province) and one-horned Javan rhinoceros, which live in Ujung Kulon National Park on western Java Island, needed to be continuously preserved, he said.

Other rare flora and fauna species in Indonesia include Rafflesia Arnoldi giant flower and orangutan (Pongo).
