HEALTH MINISTRY: FLOODS HITTING SULAWESI, KALIMANTAN, SUMATRA

Jakarta, Oct. 27 (ANTARA) - Floods are currently hitting a number of provinces in Sulawesi, Kalimantan and Sumatra but so far the situation was still under control although two people were killed and more than 100 others injured, a health ministry official said.

In North Sumatra province, two persons were killed and 91 others injured in the flood disaster, Dr Rustam S Pakaya, head of the health ministry's Crisis Control Center (PPK), said here on Monday.

Floods in West Kalimantan and West Sulawesi provinces did not claim any lives, he said.

In Central Sulawesi Province, some 18 people were injured, and one resident was reportedly missing in Gorontalo Province, due to the floods, according to him.

"Flood victims in Gorontalo are currently being evacuated to refugee camps, but the situation is still under control," Rustam S Pakaya said.

He warned local administration authorities to be always on alert as the country is just entering the rainy season.

It was earlier reported that thousands of Gorontalo residents were forced to flee their homes to higher ground following floods hitting their areas since Sunday evening.

More than 2,000 people were evacuated from their homes in 10 neighborhoods, namely South Heledulaa, North Heledulaa, Moodu, Biawu, Bugis, Tenda, Ipilo, Tamalate, Tenilo and Limba U II, in Gorontalo City.

The floodwaters reaching a height of between 40 centimeters and 1.5 meter, paralyzed the city as a number of office buildings, shops and school buildings were inundated.
