AMAF+3 AGREES TO EXTENSION OF ASEAN RICE RESERVES PROJECT
Jakarta, Oct 27 (ANTARA) - ASEAN plus three (Japan, China and Korea) in the meeting of ASEAN Ministers of Agriculture and Forestry AMAF+3 in Hanoi, Vietnam, reached agreement on an extension of the East Asia Emergency Rice Reserve (EAERR) pilot project.
"AMAF+3 agreed to the extension of the East Asia Emergency Rice Reserve pilot project until 2010, as it was scheduled to expire by 2009," Indonesian Agriculture Minister Anton Apriyantono said at Soekarno-Hatta international airport in Tangerang Sunday night, upon arrival from Vietnam attending the AMAF and AMAF+3 from October 20 to 25.
He said that the EAERR was a project linked to rice reserves in case a country became short of the staple due to natural disaster.

"These rice reserves could be increased any time," he said.
Achmad also said that Indonesia had once also received 200 tons of rice under the EAERR project early in 2008 after floods hit West Java, Central Java, and East Java.
The agriculture minister said further that the AMAF+3 meeting also reached agreement on several ASEAN cooperation proposals, including a farmers exchange program from Indonesia.
He also said he had bileral ministerial meetings with Laos and Vietnam, and SOM level meetings with Cambodia and Myanmar.
With Vietnam, Indonesia established cooperation in rice, rubber and coffee research, and in the 30th AMAF meeting, ASEAN agreed to Indonesian President's proposal a strategic and comprehensive scheme to bolster regional food security called ASEAN Integrated Food Security (AIFS) Framework.
The AIFS was coupled with a Strategic Plan of Action on Food Security in the ASEAn Region (SPA-FS).
Anton added that the ASEAN agricultural and forestry ministers agreed to recommend AIFS and SPA-FS documents to the ASEAN Summit di Thailand in next month which had been designed by the ASEAN heads of state in the Bangkok Statement on Food Security in the ASEAN Region.
And regard to the impact of the climate change, ASEAN agriculture and forestry ministers endorsed Indonesia's proposal on the ASEAN Strategy in Addressing the Impact of Climate Change on Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, and the formation of a forum for the cooperation.
"The ASEAN agriclture and forestry ministers are committed to immediately make a regional approach and formulate a strategic work plan to identify mitigation and adaptation activities in facing the impacts of climate change on agriculture, fisheries and forestry, the Indonesian agricultural minister said.
