TEI RECORDS $77.6 MILLION WORTH OF TRANSACTIONS

Jakarta, Oct 25 (ANTARA) - A grand exhibition of top Indonesian products dubbed Trade Expo Indonesia (TEI) 2008 recorded the clinching of US$77.6 million worth of transactions until 12.00 local time on Saturday.

"These are the transactions until yesterday (Friday). Not all transactions today (Saturday) have been reported. On Friday alone, transactions reached a total value of US$42 million," chief of the National Agency for Export Development (BPEN) Bachrul Chairi said on Saturday.

The agency had set itself a target of US$220 million in transactions from the six-day expo which opened on Tuesday.

"We are optimistic the value of business transactions will continue to increase as many stands are still making business deals with buyers. The total value of transactions made during the expo will officially be known early next week," he said.

Until Saturday afternoon, furniture took the lead among the commodities displayed at the expo, contributing 32.3 percent or US$25 million to the transactions.

Paper products came in second with US$10 million, followed by mining products US$7.3 million, palm oil US$6 million and handicraft articles goods US$5.8 million.

A total of 7,427 foreign buyers had visited the expo which will end on Sunday.

"Most or 155 of the foreign buyers came from Malaysia , 125 from Japan , 121 from Saudi Arabia, 95 each from Italy and Singapore," he said.

Bulgaria ranked first in terms of transactions value with US$11.5 million (14.8 percent), Afghanistan US$7.8 million, Japan US$5.1 million, Algeria US$4.7 million and South Korea US$4.4 million.
