YOGYAKARTA TO COOPERATE WITH BAALBECK IN LEBANON
Yogyakarta, Oct 25 (ANTARA) - Yogyakarta and the Lebanese city of Baalbeck have signed an agreeement to cooperate.
The city's mayor Herry Zudianto signed a "Letter of Intent" (LoI) on the cooperation with his Baalbeck counterpart, Bassam Raad, at Yogyakarta's city hall here on Saturday.
"I hope this cooperation will bring benefits for the peoples of the two cities," Zudianto said.
He also hoped the LOI could be developed later into a memorandum of understanding so that the cooperation could be realized in more concrete form.
Mayor Raad meanwhile said the signing of the LOI was historic for Baalbeck because it was the first such accord it had concluded with a city in an Islamic country.
"Islamic states have an obligation to cooperate with each other," he said.
He also hoped the cooperation could be translated into concrete actions such as the sending of a Yogyakarta art delegation to a summer festival in Baalbeck next year.
And "starting from now residents of Yogyakarta are honorary residents of Baalbeck," he said to the applause of those attending the signing ceremony.
Lebanon plans to send an art troupe to the Jogja Java Festival to be held on the occasion of Yogyakarta's 252nd anniversary.
To show its seriousness in the cooperation the Lebanese government had agreed to designate 500,000 square meters of land for the setting up of a Yogyakarta-Baalbeck free zone.
The Baalbeck administration had also provided a plot of land for the setting up of a House of Jogyakarta where products from Yogyakarta and other cities in Indonesia could be exhibited.
Indonesian ambassador to Lebanon Bagas Hapsono meanwhile said that under the initial agreement priority would be given to cooperation in the fields of economy, culture and administration.
Under the administration cooperation Yogyakarta could send two representatives to Baalbeck for an internship and vice versa while under the cultural cooperation Yogyakarta may send its Ramayana dance troupe to Bogus Temple in Baalbeck in July or August next year.
