MEDIA PRACTITIONERS, BLOGGERS TO DISCUSS FUTURE OF MASS MEDIA

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 25 (Bernama) -- Editors, scholars, bloggers and researchers will meet in a forum on Thursday to discuss the future of the Malaysian mass media in the face of challenges posed by the Internet and
alternative media.

To be held at Universiti Malaya, a leading local university, they will
examine whether the alternative media have indeed become the "mainstream media"
in Malaysia.

They are also expected to discuss the trends and future of the mass media
in the country.

The forum is jointly organised by the South-South Information Gateway
(SSIG), a unit under the Information Ministry that was set up to foster
greater flow of information among developing nations, and Universiti Malaya.

A statement from SSIG Friday said the forum on the "Trends and Future of
the
Malaysian Mass Media" was to mark World Development Information Day (WDID)
instituted by the United Nations in 1972.

Alongside this forum on Oct 30, is an exhibition showcasing the
developments of information technology in the country.

To be officiated by Information Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek, the forum
will hear the views and analyses of editors, a scholar, a researcher, a blogger
and a legal expert on the media industry.

Among the speakers are journo-blogger Rocky's Bru, president of the
National Union of Journalists Norila Daud, group chief editor of The Star
newspaper Wong Chun Wai, head of Department of Media Studies of Universiti
Malaya Prof Dr Azizah Hamzah, chief editor of Sin Chew English language portal
Bob Teoh, and Bernama editorial adviser Azman Ujang.

The others are Assoc Prof Indrajit Banerjee, secretary-general of the
Asian Media Information & Communication Centre (AMIC), and advocate & solicitor
Bhag Singh.

The forum will be divided into two sessions and the two moderators are
Prof Datuk Mohamad Abu Bakar, dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences of
UM, and Zainon Ahmad, political editor of The Sun newspaper.

The exhibition is organised by the Ministry of Energy, Water and
Communications, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Ministry
of Information, Malaysian National Commission of Unesco, and the information
technology industry and business players.
