AKBAR TANJUNG GETS MUCH SUPPORT AS PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE

Medan, N Sumatra, Oct 24 (ANTARA)- Akbar Tanjung, former chairman of Golkar Party said he had received lots of support from the party as well as from outsiders to become one of the party's candidates for the 2009 presidential post.
"The support came from Golkar's provincial and district chapters including from outsiders but I forget their names. Yet, the important thing is that I don't make any moves and I am not in the party's structure," he said after arriving here on Friday.
Akbar said the internal and external support was about respect for him.
"They (provincial and district chapters) respected me particularly during the recent national board meeting of Golkar party in Jakarta. On the occasion they expressed their loyalty to me and mentioned my name as one of the party's presidential candidates, that's all," he said.
However, the Golkar party will not announce its presidential candidates until after next year's legislative election, he said, adding that the party's national leaders meeting will decide on its presidential nominees.
"So let's just wait. Of course there are seven names which have been proposed to the party's executive board (DPP). After that the DPP will conduct a survey to shortlist the names, and then the party's special national leaders meeting will decide on its candidates," he said.
Of the seven names, six are from the party namely Jusuf Kalla (Golkar's general chairman), Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, Surya Paloh, Aburizal Bakrie, Ginandjar Kartasasmita and Agung Laksono, while the outsiders include Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
