20 UKM STUDENTS SUBMIT COMPLAINT TO SUHAKAM OVER MISTREATMENT BY SECURITY

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 24 (Bernama) -- Twenty students of Universiti Kebangsaan
Malaysia (UKM) Thursday submitted a complaint to the Malaysian Human Rights
Commission (Suhakam) alleging mistreatment by the university's security guards,
last Friday.

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (National University of Malaysia) is a
public university located in Bangi, Selangor which is about 35 km south of Kuala
Lumpur.

They said the incident occurred when they tried to meet Higher Education
Minister Khaled Nordin and hand over a memorandum on the campus
election.

One of the students, Mohd Farid Hamlud, 23, said they were just trying to
meet Khaled, who was attending a National Career Carnival at the university, but
were stopped by security guards.

Mohd Farid, a Computer Science student, claimed that he was punched,
clawed,
elbowed and slapped by the guards.

He later lodged a police report at the Kajang police station.

Meanwhile, Suhakam Commissioner, Dr Chiam Heng Keng said a thorough
investigation would be carried out to ensure a fair judgement to all
quarters.

"We will look through the AUKU (University and University Colleges
Act) and
record statements from both parties to determine the case and if they (security
guards) had really used violence, legal action would be taken against them," he
said.
