SINGAPORE READY TO RECEIVE 10,000 INDONESIAN WORKERS
Makassar, Oct 24 (ANTARA) - Singapore is prepared to receive a total of 10,000 workers from Indonesia to be employed in its tourism sector following the completion of two new tourist resorts in the city state, a Singapore Tourism Board (STB) official said here Friday.
"High-paying job opportunities are open for Indonesian workers in Singapore with the completion of two Integrated Resorts (IRs) at Marina Bay and Sentosa Island," Tut Turturi Meswary, an STB staffer and assistant manager of Singapore Educations Services in Eastern Indonesia, said , adding that the two resorts would y absorb around 10,000 workers directly and 25,000 indirectly.
She said Singapore is a tiny country with a population of about 4 million of which 1 million were migrant workers and students of various educational institutions in the country.
According to Turtury, Singapore was the home of around 7,000 multinational companies which were playing a role in strengthening the education system in the country and absorbing millions of workers.
She said employment in Singapore continued to grow strongly as the economy maintained its rapid expansion. In the first three quarters of 2007, 171,500 new jobs were created, which was close to the 176,000 for the whole of 2006.
For the whole of 2007, Singapore's economy had grown 7.5% and drew in a record S$16 billion of fixed asset investments in manufacturing and projects generating S$3 billion of total business spending in services. The government expects the Singapore economy to grow by 4.5% to 6.5% in 2008.
Singapore is a popular travel destination, making tourism one of its largest industries.
About 9.7 million tourists visited Singapore in 2006. The Orchard Road shopping district is one of Singapore's most well-known and popular tourist draws.
To attract more tourists, the government decided to legalize gambling and to allow two casino resorts (euphemistically called Integrated Resorts) at Marina South and Sentosa.
